The brief
A dating app for the African community and its diaspora, across more than thirty countries: profiles you can trust, matches that make sense, and a conversation that does not keep you waiting.
With everything a dating app has to hold from day one: account security, moderation, and a freemium model where premium earns its keep.
What I shipped
RenCall, the app and its back office:
- photo-verified profiles, and an account protected by two-factor authentication;
- a compatibility algorithm, and matches by affinity;
- real-time chat, incognito mode;
- moderation — reports, blocks, review — and the tools to run it;
- freemium, and a premium paid inside the app.
The hard part
Real-time chat and the compatibility algorithm, together. Chat has to deliver a message instantly, on two phones that lose and regain the network, without dropping one or showing one twice — and stay readable by moderation when it must.
Compatibility has to suggest profiles that hold up from few signals — answers, preferences, what someone liked — without locking anyone into the same faces or showing what they already passed on. Both come down to data: what you keep, what you recompute, and when.
The outcome
An app where the first conversation comes quickly, where the profiles you see have a verified face, and where an account is protected like a bank’s — across more than thirty countries, on freemium and premium.
