  1. The brief

    A founder, a former international student himself, wanted to give French-speaking African students moving to France what he never had: someone who reads the documents, explains the paperwork — visa, housing, CAF, CROUS — and connects them with people who have been through it.

    It called for an assistant that answers at any hour, mentors you can trust, groups by city and university, and a model that is free first, premium after.

  2. What I shipped

    Studlas, on the web and on Android:

    • Mary, the AI assistant: she analyses documents, checks CAF, APL and CROUS applications, guides the paperwork without jargon, and recommends mentors and groups;
    • certified mentors one-to-one — verified identity, certification, ratings, an impact score;
    • groups by city and university, expert lives, a forum, events and partner offers;
    • a path before, during and after arrival, up to job opportunities and the private Circle;
    • free, monthly or yearly premium, and AI credits bought one at a time for Mary.
  3. The hard part

    The assistant. Reading a student’s document — a transcript, a certificate, a lease, a photo of a form — and saying something right about it is extraction, verification and caution: what Mary does not know, she has to say, and never make up a CAF rule.

    And billing the AI credits: every answer has a real, variable cost that has to be counted the moment it is incurred — debit before answering, refund if the answer fails, and make one-off credits live alongside a premium that “tenfolds” Mary without making her free.

  4. The outcome

    An app on Google Play, a “Studying in France” guide rated 4.8 out of 5 by more than a hundred and twenty reviews, and an assistant that answers at three in the morning to a student who just received a letter they do not understand.
